We’ve launched a new fund raising campaign to pay down the veterinarian bill for Steele Away Home – Canine Foster and Rescue.  The Home is where the DOG is shirt campaign.

If you’ve ordered our shirts (produced by Bonfire) before, you know they are high quality, snuggly soft, and durable.

This time we offer 6 styles from tank top to sweatshirt, 5 colors (except the jersey), and sizes S  M  L  XL  and 2XL

The shirts will print and ship for delivery in mid April, just in time for your summertime fun!

Healthy Dog Treats

dog treats buckwheat cookies

This fund raising campaign centers around healthy, home made, dog treats.  These treats are offered in two flavors: Buckwheat-Pumpkin and yummy Peanut Butter.

The purchase of these treats goes directly to pay down Steele Away Home – Canine Foster and Rescue’s veterinarian bills so we can continue to save abused, abandoned, and neglected dogs in Cocke County TN.

Buckwheat-Pumpkin Dog Treats

Buckwheat is not wheat.  It’s not even considered a grain therefore it is gluten free.  Buckwheat is actually the seed of a flowering fruit that is related to rhubarb and sorrel.  It is a popular substitute for wheat for those who are gluten-intolerant.  We buy USDA certified organic buckwheat flour that is 100% whole “grain”.

Pumpkin is a great low-calorie source of fiber.

Raw honey is a highly digestible form of energy.

We combine these three ingredients to get our Buckwheat-Pumpkin dog treats.  Crunchy disks of healthy flavor.

Peanut Butter Dog Treats

For these treats we use certified non-GMO whole wheat flour, xylitol-free peanut butter, milk, egg, and baking powder to make a scrumptious snack for your canine companion.

Both of our offerings use human-grade foodstuffs and are prepared in a sanitary environment so they are consumable by people as well as dogs.  So if you want to see what’s got your dog so excited, go ahead and try one.  Just remember their palate is not as accustomed to seasonings as yours is.

Where are these found?

For right now these treats are found exclusively at Cedarwood Veterinary Hospital in Newport TN.  We may start bringing them to public events like festivals, and the periodic Steele Away Home Rummage Sales, just to test whether enough of The General Public have enough interest for it to be worth the extra effort.

Shipping Dog Treats

Some folks have asked if these treats are available for mail-order.  Shipping them brings up several concerns:

  1. COST To avoid having to calculate individual shipping prices on each order, I’d need to use USPS Flat Rate shipping. Their smallest box is 8 5/8” x 5 3/8” x 1 5/8” – I can fit three bags of dog treats in that, product total $9.00.  But then I’d have to charge another $7.20 for postage.  Ouch!  The next size larger box is roughly 13”x11”x4” – I should be able to fit a dozen bags in there and the shipping cost is $13.65.  A better value as far as cost of shipping per bag, but who’s going to want to order a dozen bags of treats at a time?
  2. BREAKAGE Common carriers are not known for treating packages gently.  I’d hate to have a customer’s dog treats arrive as so many bags of chips and dust.  Using larger boxes to allow for sufficient cushioning shoots up the shipping cost.
  3. SPOILAGE These treats are considered shelf stable for specific time frames based on normal conditions in the average home.  Having them packed into semi’s and sent across the country in summer could subject them to high temperatures that could hasten spoilage.  I would never want to make anyone’s dog sick.
  4. TIME Then there is the issue that I have no intention of starting a new career as a dog cookie bakery.  If they were to become popular, I’d be spending all my time baking, and packaging, and shipping dog treats and have little time to work with my foster dogs.

So for now we’ll stick to local availability.  I could make up extras to take to events like our upcoming ribbon cutting and sell direct to the public – if the public is interested in them.  We are developing a following through Cedarwood: but that’s a specialty audience.
